About this episode

Clients keep asking me the same question: we make great money, so why do we still feel broke? In this episode I compare what life cost in 1926 with what it costs today, starting with a gallon of milk and working up to an entire working life. The small things got cheaper. A gallon of milk took about an hour of work to earn in 1926, and today it takes about eight minutes. The commitments got much bigger.

I build an illustrative monthly budget for a family of four. A mortgage, two new cars, child care, health insurance, home insurance, technology and a dog come to $7,548 a month, which is more than the median household earns, before groceries, taxes or retirement savings. From there I talk about why debt builds, how to get out of it, and why income alone doesn't measure financial security.
